PREVIEW-Soccer-Old rivals in a fix in the Libertadores Cup

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 26 (Reuters) - Old rivals Gremio and Internacional both need home wins this week to stay in contention in their respective groups in the South American Libertadores Cup.

The two Brazilian teams from the southern city of Porto Alegre, both former Libertadores winners and both among the pre-tournament favourites, have struggled to get into gear.

Defending champions Internacional host Velez Sarsfield of Argentina at the Beira-Rio stadium on Wednesday while Gremio take on Colombia's Deportes Tolima at the Olimpico, around two kilometres down the road, the previous evening.

Both will be out to avenge defeats against the same opponents.

Gremio, champions in 1983 and 1995, went down to a shock 1-0 defeat against Tolima while Internacional were thumped 3-0 in their first meeting with Velez in Buenos Aires.

The Poor Take the Brunt

CARACAS, Feb 14 (IPS) - Poor people are the intended beneficiaries of a large proportion of public policies. They are also those who suffer most from the harmful effects of corruption, according to experts gathered in the Venezuelan capital for a symposium hosted by Transparency International (TI) and its national branch in this country.

"Corruption traps millions in poverty, despite a decade of progress in establishing anti-corruption laws and regulations," and some countries' ability to fight it has significantly fallen, said TI's Chair, Huguette Labelle of Canada.

The meeting is being held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the adoption in Caracas of the Inter-American Convention Against Corruption (IACAC), a Venezuelan proposal that was signed on Mar.

The wrong model

I am calling regarding the story about East St. Louis School District 189 naming a school after former Washington Park Police Chief James Avant. As you reported he died while driving drunk. He was speeding. He was accused of helping to keep illegal gambling going. It's no wonder East St. Louis is a mess. They think of these kinds of people as their heroes. What are their children to think? I am sending this to Jay Leno. What a huge laugh.

Next, Powell School?

I see that East St. Louis Democrat Charlie Powell, already in prison for vote fraud, has been indicted on federal conspiracy and pollution charges. Maybe they will name a school after him, too.

Turn down the sound

What's with people and their loud, thumping music blaring out of their vehicles while driving down the street? I have not-so-good neighbors who have my windows rattling every time they come and go.
